From Emily — former high school history teacher turned LG executive office assistant!
If you’re anything like me, when gift-giving season rolls around you want something that feels thoughtful, easy, and actually useful. So I reached out to my teacher friends, former coworkers, and siblings who are still in the classroom (from elementary all the way through high school), and these were the gift ideas that came up again and again.
1. Gift Cards
This was the top answer from every single teacher I talked to. Gift cards are practical, appreciated, and never go unused. Think coffee, Amazon, Target, bookshops — and anything that can be added to an app is a bonus so it doesn’t get lost in the shuffle of daily classroom life.
2. A School Supplies Refresh
Teachers go through supplies quickly. Tissues, good pens, pencils, sticky notes, fun stickers — all of these get used constantly. Putting together a simple “classroom essentials” basket is a thoughtful and incredibly useful gift.
3. School Spiritwear
A cozy school-branded sweatshirt or blanket is something a teacher will reach for often. It’s fun, personal to their school, and perfect for those chilly classrooms or long after-school grading sessions.
4. Personalized Ornaments
This was one of my personal favorites when I taught. A sweet ornament from a student, especially with a handwritten note on the back, becomes something you pull out year after year. It’s sentimental in the best way.
5. A Monogrammed Bag
Teachers carry a lot — papers, supplies, snacks, personal items, you name it. A monogrammed tote or bag helps keep everything organized and feels like a special, personalized treat.
6. A Personalized Classroom Sign
Whether it’s their name, a welcome sign, or a fun quote, a classroom sign is a unique gift that adds a bit of personality to their space. It’s something they’ll proudly display.
7. Quality Candles or Hand Soap
Small, nice-smelling luxuries go a long way. A good candle, hand soap, or room spray makes their home or classroom feel a little brighter at the end of a long day.
What to Skip
Teachers don’t need any more mugs or cups — trust me. They already have plenty. The only exception is a truly great water bottle, which is always useful.
