92. From Kindergarten Drop Off to Empty Nester: Life Transitions with Sabina, Brittany's Mom!

92. From Kindergarten Drop Off to Empty Nester: Life Transitions with Sabina, Brittany's Mom!

No matter our age, we all still need our moms!

Today’s episode is a real treat because Brittany is sitting down with her mom, Sabina, right after she dropped off Collins on her first day of Kindergarten!

Sabina was a teacher for several years, and of course, you know - a MOM. So she knows a thing or two about the emotions that come along with new milestones in your children’s lives.

Any first time parents dropping off their kids to school this week?! Sabina has a few tips for you during this transition time!

  1. You have to keep telling yourself:Your kids are going to be okay! Sabina is here to tell you that yes, your kids will be nervous - but they also WANT to go to school. So while they will most likely cry when you leave them, know that they are in good hands with the teacher, and they are about to have so much FUN. She says that it never fails: the moment the parent is out of sight, the child stops crying!

  2. Start the school year routine even before the school year starts. Sabina suggests even just holding books at bedtime will help them feel more comfortable at school. So let your children know that they are going to be starting bedtime sooner, but help them feel excited that they get to read you a book of their choosing!

  3. Helping your children to be *social* is key! Sabina said that she saw that those who were more comfortable in social settings had a tendency to carry that through with them into adulthood. This can help set your child up for success in later years, and know that if they aren’t that outgoing right now, the teacher is here to help with that! Sabina would ask a student she trusted and knew played well with others to work alongside those that may be more introverted. Your teacher is looking out for your child!

A great tip Sabina adds into the conversation when helping your child to follow the rules is to invite the child into *making* the rules. At the beginning of each school year, Sabina would let her students know there would be rules, but then asked what they thought they should be! She said she was always surprised because they ended up being more strict than she would have put in place, but they feel excited to follow them since they created them. She said this was a great tactic at home as well!

But the duo doesn’t stop the conversation at the early years of childhood! They also chat about:

  • Sabina’s memories on dropping Brittany off at K3 and college
  • How to help your children through adversity
  • How to team up with your child’s teacher to help set your child up for success
  • The transition into the empty nester phase
  • The difference between your 40s and 50s

And the gals round out their conversation discussing their upcoming trip to Paris to watch Jarryd, Brittany’s brother, compete in the Paralympics. Find out if they still get nervous watching him!

This episode is sure to warm your heart and make you want to hug your mom!
